Participation in sports is an integral part of the student's educational experience and Old Dominion University is committed to providing sports participation opportunities for all students. The total sports program consists of lifetime sports instruction offered by the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; intramurals, recreation and sport clubs offered by the Department of Recreational Sports; and intercollegiate athletics offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. These programs are collectively designed to provide opportunities for all students to participate in a variety of recreational physical fitness and competitive sports activities. A wide variety of activities are offered in order to meet the diverse needs of the University's student body.
In planning the development of the academic, recreational and competitive programs, the University has identified the following general goals:
1. To provide wholesome recreational and intramural opportunities for the University community.
2. To provide a sport club program that offers additional challenges for students with common related sports interests.
3. To provide intercollegiate athletic competition in selected sports for outstanding student-athletes.
4. To provide experiences in lifetime sports which contribute toward a liberal education.
5. To provide experiences that will lead to an understanding of the effects of exercise and other forms of stress upon the human body.
Progress toward each of these general goals has been substantial in recent years and continued growth and development of the goals is projected in the years ahead.
Specific goals in the intercollegiate athletic program include:
1. To provide opportunities for students with superior athletic ability to develop and utilize this talent through organized competition with students from other universities.
2. To provide a continuous program of school/community relations designed to emphasize the educational values of competitive sports as integral parts of the education curriculum.
3. To assist in publicizing the University and developing alumni relations.
4. To assist in developing student body spirit and in the recruiting and retention of students.
The following principles and assumptions have been utilized in planning and administering the athletic program:
1. The principle of academic integrity will continue to be applied to athletic programming decisions in order to ensure that the educational values, practices and mission of Old Dominion University determine the standards by which the intercollegiate athletic program is conducted.
2. The principle of selective excellence will continue to be applied to athletic programming decisions in an effort to ensure the quality of the intercollegiate athletic program.
3. The men's and women's basketball teams will continue to strive for national recognition and excellence.
4. The sports listed as potential revenue and non-revenue sports will strive for immediate goals of being consistently successful on a conference and regional level and the long-range goal of consistent national recognition.
5. Old Dominion University will make a good-faith effort to comply with Title IX regulations and to promote affirmative action goals in such areas as hiring, promotion, training, and general work environment.
6. Old Dominion University will strive to expand and improve the recreational sports program.
7. The Old Dominion University Intercollegiate Foundation will continue to pursue its goal of funding scholarships for all intercollegiate sports at the NCAA limit.
