An All-American on the field and in the classroom, Todd Azar not only helped put ODU baseball on the national map, but rewrote the Monarchs record book as well.
In 1985, he helped lead the Monarchs to a 50-11 record, a national ranking of 11th and the Sun Belt Conference title. A year later in 1986 the Cherry Hill, NJ. native won the Sun Belt Conference batting title with a .486 average which ranked him third nationally. He established a Sun Belt Tournament record with 16 basehits and was named the league's Player of the Year and the Tournaments Most Valuable Player.
Azar was named third-team All-American by the National Baseball Coaches Association in 1985. In 1986 he was named to BASEBALL AMERICA'S MAGAZINE first team All-American squad, but the honors didn't stop on the field. He also earned All-American honors in the classroom and in 1986 and 1987 he was named first team Academic All-American by GTE/The College Sports Information Director's Association of America.
Azar was drafted twice at ODU; as a junior by Milwaukee and by Seattle after his senior year. He played for the United States National team in 1986 and was named the team's MVP as he hit .384 with six homers.
Azar completed his career at ODU as the school's all-time leader with a .378 batting average, 301 base hits, 258 runs batted in, 65 doubles, 35 home runs and 487 total bases. He earned his degree in 1987 in finance.
