Final Stats

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Sean Singletary scored six points in the waning seconds to give Virginia an 80-76 victory over Old Dominion in the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational on Monday. ODU senior Brian Henderson led the Monarchs with a career high 26 points.

ODU led at halftime, 37-29 and by as much as 10, 41-31 with 17:32 left.

A 3-pointer by Singletary with six seconds left tied the score at 75-75. Singletary then hit a layup and hit a free throw after a steal with four seconds left to give Virginia the lead for good at 78-75.

Old Dominion (18-16) had a chance to come back with three seconds left after Jonathan Adams made a free throw to cut Virginia's lead to 78-76. But Adams turned the ball over and Ben Finney fouled Virginia's Calvin Baker. Baker hit two free throws to seal the win.

Singletary finished with 22 points. Mamadi Diane had 14 points for Virginia and Jamil Tucker scored 11.

Brian Henderson led Old Dominion with 26 points.

All-CAA forward Gerald Lee added 16 points for the Monarchs and red-shirt freshman Frank Hassell scored ten points and hauled down five rebounds. Fellow red-shirt freshman forward Keyon Carter scored a career high nine points and hauled down a game high seven rebounds.

Senior Brandon Johnson came up with three more steals on the night to finish the season with 91 steals which is the second highest single season total in CAA history (Jarion Chiles of American had 95 in 2000) and the most in ODU single season history. Johnson, who ranks sixth nationally in steals at 2.7 completed his career with 238 which ranks him third al-time in CAA history and second all-time at ODU. (Frank Smith '88) has 295.
 

 

In career games played, Brian Henderson is ODU's all-time leader with 133 and Johnson finishes with 126 which ranks him seventh.

The ODU seniors finished their career with the school's best four-year mark of 94-41. They also won 66 games in three years.

Virginia (17-15) will face the winner of Monday night's game between Valparaiso and Houston in the semifinals.
