John P. Leigh, III became Old Dominion University's first All-American golfer in 1969
when he finished fifth in the NCAA Division II National Championships and among the top
25 at the NCAA Division I Championships.
A three-time Mason-Dixon Conference champion, he lost only one dual match in three
years. Leigh won the Virginia High School state championship twice while attending Churchland High School in nearby Portsmouth, Va. He won over 100 junior tournament before
accepting a scholarship at the University of Houston, before returning to Hampton Roads and Old Dominion University.
A professional from 1969-74, Leigh has won over 70 tournaments since regaining his
amateur status in 1977. Chief among those wins was the 1983 Eastern Amateur Championship.
Leigh's contributions to Old Dominion Athletics include helping former coach Pete
Robinson tutor the golf team, serving for many years as co-chairman with Dr. Murray Rudisill
of the Old Dominion golf scholarship fund, and serving on the ODUIF golf committee.
