Sept. 15, 2005

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team, headed up by five-time World Cup coach Sue Stahl, will join the William & Mary women's lacrosse team and the University of Virginia and Naval Academy's Men's Lacrosse teams on October 1st, 2005 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex to raise money to benefit the family of former Virginia player John Driscoll who succumbed to cancer in 2002.

The women's game starts at 12:30 and will feature two Colonial Athletic Association teams in Old Dominion and William & Mary.

Old Dominion will feature many member of the 2006 squad which boast promising talent including junior midfielder Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, Md.), the most decorated Lady Monarch from last season. Jacobs received numerous awards for her efforts on the field including First Team All-CAA, All-State as voted on by the members VaSID, Second Team All-South Region, and a CAA Player of the Week honoree. Jacobs led the Lady Monarchs in four statistical categories including assists (18), points (45), groundballs (51), and caused turnovers (25) and ranked second on the squad in goals (27) and draw controls (21). The Gaithersburg, Maryland product concluded the season ranked fourth nationally in groundballs per game at 3.64 per contest. Among the conference statistics, she ended the year ranked 10th in goals per game (1.93), fourth in assists per game (1.29), seventh in points per game (3.21), third in caused turnovers per game (1.79), and topped the charts in groundballs.

Jacobs wasn't the only Lady Monarch to be among the conference leaders. Fellow classmate Ashley Stanwick (Aquasco, Md.), ODU's top goal scorer with 32 tallied, ranked seventh in the CAA in goals per game, while fellow junior Katie Veneziale (Downingtown, Pa.) finished the year ranked third in the CAA and 14th nationally in draw controls. Veneziale registered 46 over the course of the Lady Monarch's 15 games and averaged 3.07 per contest

The men's game will begin at 5 PM and will feature two of the top teams in the country. Both teams were in the NCAA Men's lacrosse tournament in 2005 with Navy losing to Virginia in the quarter final round and Virginia playing in the Final Four at Lincoln Financial Field

A highlight of this year's event will be a clinic for youth players prior to the game. Navy and Virginia players will participate in a short training session.

Funds raised from this event will go to support the family of John Driscoll, who was standout player for the University of Virginia and a member of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Over 4,000 people attended last year's event which supported the children of former Navy player Kevin Bianchi and his crewmember Peter Ober who were killed in a Navy helicopter accident.
