This Norfolk native help put track and field at the Norfolk Division on the map with his record setting long jumps and 100 yard dashes.
The 1958 season will always be remembered as Kenny Harmon's year. That season he set the school long jump record at 24-3 against Roanoke College. That same season he ran a 9.8 in the 100 yard dash. Later in the season he placed fourth in the prestigeous Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. In a field which included the 1956 Olympic gold medalist Greg Bell, Harmon long jumped his personal best of 25-1.
Harmon came to Old Dominion after a stellar career at nearby Maury High School where he competed in track and field as well as football.
Harmon joined the Norfolk Division in 1955 and when his career ended in 1960, he had won four Little Eight Conference crowns in the 100 and 200 yard dashes as well as the high jump, and long jump. He was coached by two Old Dominion University Hall of
Famers, Scrap Chandler and Lou Plummer.
In 1958 and 1959 he placed second in the Quantico Relays in the long jump. Harmon earned All-State honors in both the long jump and the 100-yard dash.
Harmon graduated in 1960 with a degree in health and physical education.
